The elegance and beauty of pearls make them one of the most valuable gems in the world. Pearl jewelry has always symbolized elegance and luxury. However, many people don't know exactly how pearls are formed. So, let's fill this gap with some useful knowledge.

Pearls are formed as a defensive reaction of mollusks. Their internal tissues are very delicate and sensitive to irritants. When a foreign object, like a grain of sand, gets inside the mollusk, it begins to produce nacre to cover the foreign body. This process can take several years, with layers of nacre accumulating, eventually forming a pearl.
Unfortunately, a mollusk can create such a wonder only once in its life. Once the shell is opened – the mollusk dies.

There are two main types of pearls: natural (wild) and cultured.
Natural pearls form on their own without human intervention, whereas cultured pearls are grown by inserting a nucleus and tissue from another mollusk into the pearl mollusk. This stimulates the production of nacre and the formation of the pearl around the nucleus.
Cultured pearl production is a widespread business in many countries. Mollusks are placed in special nets and are cared for over several years while the pearls grow. Then, the ready pearls are harvested, and the mollusk meat becomes a delicacy.
Due to the near-total destruction of wild freshwater mollusks, wild pearl harvesting is banned worldwide.

Pearl colors vary depending on the type of mollusk and its environment. They can be white, cream, pink, gray, and black.
Another wonder on Earth – golden pearls. These incredible jewels are produced by only one person – Jacques Branellec. His underwater "golden plantations" are located in the South China Sea, on the island of Palawan.
There is a belief that cultured and artificial pearls are the same. This is not true.
Cultured pearls are formed under human supervision but in a completely natural way. In other words, these are natural pearls that grew in an artificial environment.
On the other hand, artificial pearls are entirely man-made. In the past, glass beads were used as the base. Later, glass was replaced with alabaster or shell. Several layers of nacre are applied to the "blanks," and they are colored in the desired shade. High-quality artificial pearls are very difficult, sometimes even impossible, to distinguish from natural pearls. That's why they have confidently won the hearts of jewelry lovers.

Delicate and vulnerable, pearls have captured the hearts of millions. From jewelry to exclusive accessories, the applications of this wonder are endless. Unlike emeralds and gold, they are underwater treasures created by nature itself!
Vividly colored rainbow pearls are entirely a creation of human hands. Genuine pearls come in white, cream, pink, and, rarely, black or dark blue.
The value of pearls is based on factors such as size, shape, surface quality, luster, and color. Larger size, rare color, and perfect shape – each of these details adds "weight." Artificial pearls are inexpensive, while marine ones can cost a pretty penny.
