GS1 barcode prefix checker

Look up a GS1 prefix, check a GTIN-12 or GTIN-13 check digit and browse prefix organizations and special ranges.

A GS1 prefix does not identify the country of manufacture. It identifies the organization that allocated the prefix, or a special purpose. The product may have been manufactured in another country.

What a GS1 prefix means

A prefix identifies an allocating GS1 organization or a special purpose. It does not identify the country where a product was manufactured. A business can manufacture goods outside the country of its GS1 organization.

Check a prefix or a full barcode

Enter three prefix digits or a complete 12- or 13-digit number. Spaces, hyphens and parentheses are accepted. For GTIN-12 / UPC-A, the lookup adds an implied leading zero before identifying the prefix.

What the check digit proves

For a full GTIN, the tool calculates the expected final digit using the standard alternating weights. A valid check digit only verifies this arithmetic check: it does not prove registration, ownership or authenticity. A three-digit prefix has no check-digit result.

Special and shared ranges

Some ranges are used for restricted circulation, publications, coupons, demonstrations or future allocation. Belgium and Luxembourg share an organization; its prefix does not distinguish the two countries. Prefix 000 may need additional digits to determine its purpose.

Directory and copying

Search by country, ISO code, organization or numeric prefix, and filter by region or special ranges. Copy prefix saves three digits; Copy result includes the explanation and a link to this tool. Use the official GS1 ownership lookup when you need registration information.
