This symbol represented power, strength, and the unity of the state.
• Sacred Meaning. Another theory claims that the trident has religious or mythological significance. Some historians believe it symbolizes the trinity – harmony between sky, earth, and water, or the three stages of life: birth, existence, and death. Others associate it with the Christian Holy Trinity, which became significant after the Christianization of Kyivan Rus.
• Depiction of a Falcon or a Dove. Some scholars see the trident as a stylized image of a bird – a falcon representing freedom and spiritual strength, or a dove symbolizing peace. This interpretation is linked to pagan beliefs and the transitional phase of Christianization.
• A Trade and Economic Symbol. Another hypothesis suggests that the trident was a symbol of trade routes or economic power, as Kyivan Rus was a major trade hub in Eastern Europe. It may have represented control over the “Varangian to Greek” trade route.

The oldest known depiction of the trident dates back to the 10th century. It has been found on coins, pottery, and seals used in Kyivan Rus. It was chosen as the personal emblem of Volodymyr the Great, appearing on coins alongside his portrait.

Where Else Has the Trident Been Used?

The tradition of using the trident as a national emblem began in 1918 when it was officially adopted as the State Emblem of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UNR).

In the 20th century, the trident became a symbolic sign for various political organizations. For example, the emblem of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists featured a trident with a sword replacing the central prong. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) used the trident on medals, currency, printed materials, and propaganda posters.

How Was the State Emblem of Ukraine Chosen?
